Responses of the biogeochemical sulfur cycle to Early Permian tectonic and climatic events

The late Paleozoic was characterized by a series of continental collisions and ice ages. Despite the drastic environmental changes, sparse sulfur isotope data hinder our understanding biogeochemical cycle, especially during Early Permian. To overcome this potential bias, we present high-resolution record carbonate-associated sulfate (CAS) pyrite from Carboniferous-Permian successions Svalbard archipelago. Throughout Carboniferous, results are largely consistent with global trend, although development restricted environments resulted in regionally observed ?34SCAS peak +20‰ Gzhelian. Permian bridge gap existing record, showing steady increase contemporaneous closure Ural Seaway Gondwana glaciation, albeit superimposed short-term oscillations. enhanced incorporation diagenetic into authigenic carbonates may have caused small-scale oscillations regional regression Artinskian, but long-term increasing trend its relation to known geological events can be best explained burial flux driven major shift locus organic carbon continent ocean, lesser contribution dissolution epicontinental seaway evaporites.
